Spring walks from Puente Romano: exploring Marbella on foot

Spring brings Marbella’s best walking season. The skies deepen into a rich, uninterrupted blue, the air is clear and bright, and the wonderfully mild climate is energised by Marbella’s golden sunshine. Naturally, the outdoors calls for attention.

Step onto the promenade from Puente Romano and turn right. This is one of the most effortless walks, tracing the shoreline to Puerto Banús. Enjoy open sea views as you pass by beach clubs and the steady movement of runners, cyclists and beach goers.

Mornings feel calm and expansive, while late afternoons merge into golden tones over the water. The walk itself takes around 30 minutes at an easy pace, making it as suitable for a short stroll as it is for a longer, slower outing with stops along the way.

For those looking to add a cultural element to their stroll, the Museo Ralli sits just a minute up from the promenade at Coral Beach and is free to enter! (Turn right up the street at the Besaya Beach restaurant). The museum is home to a notable collection of contemporary Latin American art, and European surrealist influences, including Dalí’s sculptures and Joan Miró’s works.

Continuing towards Puerto Banús, you cross the red “San Francisco”-style bridge over the Río Verde, just by Chiringuito Camurí Las Cuchis. From here, the promenade leads directly into the marina.

At the entrance to Puerto Banús, you can step straight onto the pier, marked by small lighthouses at either end, or continue into the harbour itself (known as first-line Puerto Banús), to admire the super yachts, designer shops, cafés and restaurant terraces spilling out onto the sun-drenched street.

For further retail therapy, there are numerous boutiques found in almost every direction, plus the Marina Banús shopping court AND the all-you-could-need department store of El Corte Inglés just behind the third line.

Heading east from Puente Romano leads towards the marble stretch of the Paseo Marítimo, guiding you into Marbella’s centre. The setting gradually becomes more urban as you move along, though the route stays right by the sea, lined with palm trees, cafés, restaurants and relaxed beachside chiringuitos.

After around 45 minutes, an obvious turning point opens up at Avenida del Mar, where a series of sculptures by Salvador Dalí line the walkway. From here, passing through Parque de la Alameda, you cross into the Old Town, where the atmosphere shifts instantly.

The streets narrow into a network of whitewashed buildings, balconies filled with flowers and small independent galleries. At its centre sits Plaza de los Naranjos, one of Marbella’s most recognisable squares, framed by orange trees, cafés and historic buildings. Just moments away, Iglesia de la Encarnación stands as one of the area’s most important landmarks, its baroque façade anchoring the historic quarter.

Having first opened in summer 2023, Forum is a fairly new benefit to the Golden Mile, which sits just across the road from Puente Romano. Designed as a modern social and upmarket shopping and dining space, it feels polished yet relaxed, with excellent cafés, restaurants and quality boutiques spaced on different levels, arranged around central courtyards. Conveniently, there is also the beloved Scandinavian SPISA food market on the lower level next to the Swedish bakery.
