Puente Romano’s luxury pool clubs for a distinctly Marbella summer

Parasols, subtropical gardens and barefoot lunches by the sea: Puente Romano’s pool clubs are made for slowing down, whether that means relaxing with the Mediterranean glittering ahead, ordering ceviche from an oversized daybed, or wandering barefoot from the pool to a table by the beach.

Presenting a step above the familiar sunbed-and-DJ formula, each of Puente Romano’s pool clubs have their own look, pace and idea of a luxurious summer day.

La Petite Maison Pool: Riviera glamour with a playful streak

La Petite Maison is the newest of the three, and irresistibly photogenic. Situated right on the beachfront it offers incredible views of the sea and easy access to the beach.

The whole setting has a slightly theatrical Riviera charm to it: cream parasols edged in deep red with little tassels, matching red-and-cream loungers, white-clothed tables, woven bistro chairs and a curving pool that sits almost on the edge of the sea. Even the pool floor has a sense of mischief, with the words tous célèbres ici — “we’re all famous here” — written across the bottom, which tells you a fair amount about the mood before you have even ordered lunch.

It feels bright, polished and playful rather than overly serious. There is something of the South of France in the details, which works beautifully on the Golden Mile, especially with the Mediterranean directly in front of you and La Concha behind.

The terrace has that classic Riviera-brasserie look, and the menu leans into the restaurant’s French Mediterranean identity with dishes such as salade Niçoise, pissaladière and pan bagnat, alongside lighter poolside options and cocktails that make it very easy to stay put for the rest of the afternoon.

COYA Pool: a tropical oasis beneath the palms

Where La Petite Maison opens directly towards the sea, COYA is tucked into the subtropical gardens at the centre of Puente Romano. The approach takes you through palms, broad tropical leaves and the winding paths of the resort before the pool appears from within the greenery.

The planting is dense enough to make it feel private, almost as though someone has concealed an adults-only pool party in the gardens. Large, boho daybeds, Inca-inspired patterns and flashes of colour give the space far more personality than the usual neutral pool-club palette.

The day begins at a fairly civilised pace. Guests settle into the beds, order from COYA’s Peruvian menu and make the first difficult decision of the afternoon: whether to swim before or after the ceviche arrives. Tiraditos, ceviches and dishes influenced by Japanese, Chinese and Spanish cooking all suit the setting particularly well. So do the pisco cocktails, for obvious reasons.

As the afternoon moves on, the music becomes more prominent. COYA’s resident DJs give the club a sociable rhythm without making conversation completely impossible. By late afternoon, it feels less like somewhere you came solely to sunbathe and more like the beginning of a night out.

That makes it a natural choice for groups of friends, birthdays and anyone who prefers a pool day with a little momentum behind it. It also sits conveniently close to the rest of Puente Romano, should the afternoon continue into dinner and then, somehow, drinks at La Plaza.

Chambao Marbella: a relaxed hideaway between pool and sea

On the Mediterranean shores of the Golden Mile, five minutes from the resort, Chambao Marbella offers a luxury boutique resort vibe with direct beach access and a family-friendly pool club that’s noticeably more relaxed approach.

Its name comes from the simple shelters traditionally used beside the sea in southern Spain.

The pool sits among palms and mature gardens, daybeds face the sea, tables gather beneath shaded pergolas and the planting softens the edges of the whole club.

Here, the line between pool club and beach club is not especially important. You can swim in the pool, walk down to the sea or simply remain at lunch until both options become theoretical.

The restaurant is central to the experience. Fresh fish, seafood, grilled meats and dishes designed for sharing arrive at tables where nobody appears to be watching the time too closely. The daily catch is presented in a traditional fisherman’s basket, allowing guests to choose their fish and how they would like it cooked.

There are Andalusian touches throughout the menu, from tortillitas de camarones to bluefin tuna from Cádiz, alongside cocktails that are not afraid to have a little fun. The Marga-Grita, made with tequila and Palo Cortado sherry, sounds like an unlikely friendship but makes considerably more sense beside the Mediterranean.

Chambao is the most barefoot of the three clubs and the one most closely connected to the beach. It feels less like spending an afternoon at a hotel pool and more like disappearing down the coast for a long lunch, despite being only five minutes away.

CHEAT Poolside: burgers, cocktails and an easier pace

Of all the luxury poolside venues in Puente Romano, CHEAT is perhaps the easiest-going. There is no need to dress the day up too much. Go for a swim, stay for a burger and accept that the key lime pie was probably inevitable.

Set beside one of Puente Romano’s main pools, it is part American diner, part cocktail bar and entirely delicious.

The setting is bright and relaxed, with tables overlooking the water and the steady comings and goings of resort life around it. It feels less like a formal pool-club occasion and more like somewhere you can arrive slightly sun-dazed, order something substantial and stay to watch the afternoon pass.

The menu leans into American comfort food, but uses locally sourced and organic ingredients wherever possible. Crab cakes, burgers and key lime pie are among the signatures, with Puente Romano going so far as to describe CHEAT as the home of “Marbella’s naughtiest burger”. It is not the place for pretending lunch will be especially virtuous.

Cocktails keep things firmly in holiday mode, while the all-day format makes CHEAT particularly useful for those awkward hours when breakfast has been missed, lunch is running late and dinner is still a distant concern.

And when the sea wins…

There are days when even a beautiful pool cannot compete with the Mediterranean.

Chiringuito Puente Romano is not a pool club, but its position directly on the sand makes it an obvious alternative. Daybeds sit close to the water’s edge, while the DJ keeps the mood perfectly pitched from lunch into the evening. The restaurant serves breakfast through to late dinner, with the Mediterranean close enough to hear between conversations.

The atmosphere can get busy, being one of Marbella’s most popular beach bars. Gazpacho, oysters, grilled fish, truffle risotto and Wagyu burgers make for an eclectic menu, although ordering something straight from the sea usually feels like the correct decision.

It is less secluded than the pool clubs and more immersed in the life of the beach. Shoes become optional almost immediately.

Summer in paradise

At Puente Romano, summer feels best when you linger. The brightness of morning settles into the heat of the afternoon, the energy begins to shift and, by the time evening falls, the nightlife feels almost impossible to resist.

For those who live here, that rhythm soon stops feeling like an escape and becomes part of the ordinary.
