Marbella in May: a lifestyle in full bloom

There is a particular window in Marbella that sits in late spring, when the jacaranda trees decorate the streets with purple bloom, and the mornings are warm enough for swimming to become a daily ritual again. The beach clubs have all re-opened, the restaurant terraces are filled from breakfast through to dinner and the Mediterranean lifestyle unfolds into that postcard-perfect aesthetic.

In this pre-peak season, Marbella is flirting. From the Golden Mile to the surrounding hills and neighbouring towns, this time of year feels both energised and accessible. It is a season defined by spontaneity, with daytime temperatures usually hovering around 23–26°C, striking an ideal balance between warmth and comfort.

It’s a time when plans come together naturally. A morning on the tennis court turns into a long lunch, afternoons drift into barefoot walks along the beach, and the countryside invites impromptu drives to see the wildflowers scattered across the green hills.

Walk around Marbella in May, and you’ll see a canopy of purple blooms everywhere you go. The jacaranda trees arch over the streets, painting the neighbourhoods violet and leaving their petals collecting on the pavements below, turning an ordinary morning into something worth photographing.

Typically flowering between May to early June, the display of the jacaranda bloom peaks in May and it doesn't last long. A few weeks at most, which is part of what makes it so worth being here for. Within the grounds of Puente Romano, the same purple canopy appears, lining the resort's pathways and gardens, creating a special moment for residents and visitors.

Marbella’s outdoor lifestyle at its best

May is the perfect month to make the most of exploring Marbella and beyond. Places like Marbella Old Town, Estepona Old Town, Ojén, Benahavís Village and Mijas Pueblo are filled with colour, where flower-lined façades and open squares provide the perfect setting for a day of exploration.

It’s also the ideal time to take advantage of the surrounding mountains, as the temperature isn’t too hot for day-long excursions. Places like Sierra de Las Nieves, Serranía de Ronda, and Sierra Blanca are amazing hiking areas, all within easy reach of Marbella.

For a gentler pace of exercise, Marbella's friendly promenade (the Paseo Marítimo), is idyllic for walking or cycling between Marbella town and Puerto Banús. The route at this stretch runs roughly 6 to 7 kilometres, forming part of the wider 160km Senda Litoral coastal path.

Walking under blue skies, with the palm trees rustling in the breeze and the sea crystal clear beside you, you’ll find yourself thinking “there’s no place I’d rather be.” And at the heart of it, the famous Chiringuito at Puente Romano is the natural stop, whether you’re wanting breakfast, lunch, dinner, or a plush sun lounger to tan to the sound of the gentle waves.
